Quotation (with page number or parag number or time stamp if video/audio)

“Faculty have to confront their discomfort with giving up some control to the students, enabling students to help shape their assignments, set the tenor of the class, and even help form assessment criteria” (Page 1 Paragraph 2)

Comment (250-500 words)

I chose to use this quote because I think a lot of classrooms all over the world could use this strategy. Giving some control to students will not only help students stay engaged, but also be enthusiastic and excited about their work because they aren’t just doing busy work they have no interest in doing. Students could be doing things that help them progress and learn in ways they prefer rather than the teacher. Especially since the pandemic there has been an extreme lack of participation in classes. Nobody wants to share, raise their hand, or even answer questions the teacher asks anymore. A simple idea like this can have a great impact on the classroom environment and all the students as well. Another positive impact giving students more control in the classroom could be overall production when it comes to work. When students are actually interested in the work they are doing it helps them get more done in a shorter amount of time because they are more motivated. Students having more power will also help the classroom come together and build better relationships, rather than the teacher being the sole leader in the class that everyone has to do as they are told.
